Steel Trowel Finish
Dense, smooth and built for indoors.
A steel trowel finish is created by working fresh concrete with steel trowels until the surface is dense, tight and smooth. It’s the standard for garage floors, sheds and interior slabs — easy to sweep and ready for coatings, tiles or polishing.
Often chosen with power float finish, garage slabs.

Steel Trowel Finish questions, answered
Is steel trowel finish slippery?
It can be when wet, which is why we generally recommend it for indoor or covered areas.
Can I tile over it?
Yes. A steel trowel finish provides a flat, smooth base for tiles, floating floors or coatings.
Where should steel trowel finish be used?
Garage floors, shed slabs, indoor floors and anywhere that will be tiled, coated or covered. It is too smooth for uncovered outdoor areas that get wet.
How many trowelling passes does it take?
Several. We trowel as the concrete stiffens, with each pass making the surface denser and smoother. Timing depends on weather and the mix.
Can steel trowel finish be coloured?
Yes, with oxide mixed through or a colour hardener trowelled in. The smooth surface shows colour evenly.
What is the difference between a float and a trowel finish?
A wood or magnesium float leaves a slightly sandy, grippy texture. A steel trowel compresses the surface into a smooth, dense finish that is better suited to covered areas.
What is a swirl trowel finish?
A swirl or fan trowel finish leaves overlapping arcs pressed into the surface. It adds grip on outdoor paths and patios while still looking neat.
